The Self Build Challenge
Electrical engineer Ross Fanning, pictured across with Mark Murphy of Heat Network Solutions, was building a family home in Co. Wexford. Before work commenced, Ross had already done a lot of his own research into the energy options available. His calculations showed that the running costs of oil for the new two storey, four bedroomed home could be quite expensive.
Originally from Glasgow, Ross had grown up with natural gas piped in from the North Sea and always liked its clean efficiency and versatility. As his prospective new home was not on the existing natural gas pipeline, Ross was opting for LP Gas as an alternative.
'LP Gas is a cleaner burning fuel and another bonus is the actual boiler itself. It's small, the size of a kitchen cupboard, and can be installed on the utility room wall. It's neat and tidy-looking, which also appealed to me," Ross Fanning said.
After hearing that a work colleague had retrofitted his oil heating system to Flogas LP Gas and was happy with the result, Ross decided to contact a local Flogas installer for a quotation.
Mark Murphy, an independent RGII registered and Flogas approved LP Gas installer, came out to survey the site. His competitive quote, excellent track record and the Flogas promotion of a free gas boiler worth E800 were enough for Ross to give the go-ahead.
Ross was going to use LP Gas for central heating, hot water, cooking, tumbledrying and barbecuing in the garden and that's what we all worked towards."
Ross took a very active interest from the outset, from the initial planning stages through to the layout of the gas pipes, gas outlets and siting of the LP Gas tank.
'Ross was at the meetings where these decisions were made and didn't leave it to the builder completely. This is what we would always advise customers to do as it means you get everything exactly the way you want it," Mark Murphy said.
Once the gas layout was agreed and the foundations were ready, the installer then came back to lay the gas pipes before the concrete was poured. Solar panels were also installed but these only provide about 50% of hot water requirements for an average home, LP Gas is an ideal complementary fuel to cope with the shortfall.
Everything proceeded to plan and Ross and his family moved into their new home on schedule. 'The radiators heat up really quickly and within 30 minutes you have enough hot water for the kids' baths and showers. I am very pleased with all the work and looking forward to many years in our cosy new home," Ross said.
